Pre-Professional Program (ages 14 - 19)

2 LEVELS: Tap City’s popular Teen program is geared specifically to advanced teens and young adults seeking a challenging and unique educational and performance opportunity. Pre-Professional students will be placed in two groups, based on skill level. The all-inclusive program focuses on honing well-rounded tap skills in a professional environment that stresses self-discipline and excellence. Selected by video audition, students will work intensively with a professional tap choreographer in the preparation of tap choreography that will be performed on the last day of the program.

FEES & DEADLINES PPP PRE-PLACEMENT: All PPP students must be accepted into the program. Please send a submission or web link (via YouTube) that demonstrates your technique and performance skills showing the following material: time-steps, paddle and roll combinations, pull backs, wings, favorite flash step, and perform a 2-3 minute tap choreography piece/excerpt to music demonstrating your ability to keep time while expressing your personal style. Once the submitted web link is reviewed, each student will be evaluated and contacted regarding acceptance into the Pre-Professional Program. Not all applicants will be accepted. Space is limited to 35 dancers in two levels. PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS:
PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM ORIENTATION: On Monday morning, please join our PPP Director, Susan Hebach and Staff at 9:15am for a short orientation.
WARM UP & REP REVIEW: Each morning begins with time to warm and review of repertory from the day before.
REPERTORY: Each morning, Monday-Thursday, students will work with Master Tap Choreographer MAX POLLAK or BYRON TITTLE learning a professional-level work of tap repertory. Over the four days they will polish the work and prepare it for performance. On Friday evening students will perform their newly-minted work for other Tap City students, friends, and family at the Tap Future performance, at Symphony Space.
LUNCH: On the first day of the Repertory Rehearsal, students will meet at lunchtime with the choreographers for videos and talk about their dance careers. Students should bring a bag lunch. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, students will have a 1-hour lunch break.
PPP STUDIO EVENTS: TBA
PPP MASTER CLASSES: Afternoons, the dancers will have special master classes with JASON BERNARD, BARBARA DUFFY, ACIA GRAY & CALEB TEICHER FRIDAY TAP FUTURE STAGE REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE: On Friday, all the Pre-Professional Program tap dancers will report to Symphony Space for a stage rehearsal (Time TBA). ABOUT FRIDAY: Adult students will have a Tap it Out rehearsal (TBA) AND a short afternoon tech rehearsal (TBA) on stage at Symphony Space. Adult students will perform in Tap Future at 8:00pm in the evening.
ABOUT TAP IT OUT! REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCE: Adult students attend all Tap it Out Orientations & Rehearsals: Monday, July 6 (9:45am-11:45am), Tuesday, July 7 - Thursday, July 9 (1:45pm - 3:00pm) & Friday, July 10 (TBA) if they plan on participating in the presentation of Tap it Out on Saturday, July 11th at Father Duffy Square/Times Square (three presentations at 1:00pm, 1:30pm & 2:00pm) All Tap City adult & pre-professional students will rehearse four days in preparation for TAP IT OUT! Tap City’s unique outdoor celebration of percussive feet. Imagine a chorus of 100s of tapping feet performing a cappella choreography in multiple tap dance styles creating a explosion of tones and rhythms presented out of doors and FREE to the public. Tap It Out is conceived and created by the mayor of Tap City Tony Waag and is co-directed and staged by dancer/choreographer Lynn Schwab. If you are registered in the Adult or Pre-Professional Program, you have the opportunity to participate in this event as it is included in your package! Once you enroll, you will receive detailed instructions in the Spring. Each dancer will dance on their own platform, which will be supplied by Tap City, and, will learn their part of the presentation in advance via YouTube. Adult and teen group rehearsals will take place Monday, July 9th - Friday, July 13th and are designed around your regular class schedule.
