This class is for students who have learned and feel comfortable with the basic vocabulary of tap, and have at least one year of experience. Students add more complex foot and movement skills, learn new vocabulary, and develop a strong foundation of tap technique. Original combinations, time steps, paddle and roll exercises, and music fundamentals are explored. Choreography includes the instructor’s original contemporary tap creations and concepts from the Copasetic Canon and classic tap repertory. Intermediate students have a working knowledge of all tap vocabulary. They are ready for advanced concepts taught at a moderate pace and can move with speed and facility with less complicated tap choreography. In Intermediate classes, students work to develop speed, foot dexterity, clarity of technique, solid timing at all tempos and in all styles of music, along with personal expression, movement, and style in more complex combinations. Students increase their knowledge of music concepts and develop improvisation skills. Choreography and exercises include original combinations created by your instructor. Some ATDF faculty will also include Copasetic Canon and classic tap repertory, with steps and sections of dances choreographed by tap masters such as Buster Brown, Brenda Bufalino, Leon Collins, Steve Condos and Bill Robinson, etc.

Meet Leslie “Bubba” Gaines through the eyes and ears of longtime mentee and student Deborah Mitchell. Learn a few of the signature trademark steps that Bubba was known for as we also explore his legacy, career and the Copasetic philosophies that we pass on to our followers and students. Moderated by ATDF Artistic Director Tony Waag these TWO 1.5 hour events on Zoom offer up some inside, personal and candid reflections on an extraordinary artist and member of the legendary Three Dukes and Copasetics. Historic footage will also be viewed and discussed. Students of ALL levels welcome. Participants should have tap shoes handy and have a dance space to work in.

Learn a few of the signature trademark steps that Bubba was known for as we also explore his legacy, career and the Copasetic philosophies that we pass on to our followers and students. Moderated by ATDF Artistic Director Tony Waag these TWO 1.5 hour events on Zoom offer up some inside, personal and candid reflections on an extraordinary artist and member of the legendary Three Dukes and Copasetics. This class is for students who have mastered beginner level technique and are already comfortable with time steps, paddle and roll combinations, and a variety of tap technique. Advanced Beginner Tap moves at a quicker pace, continues to build on skills, and adds more complex combinations and more technique. Rhythm time steps, cross over steps, rhythm turns, more complex paddle and roll exercises, and simple flash steps such as pullbacks are included. Students learn original dances and exercises created by your teacher. Some ATDF faculty will also review and explore Copasetic Canon and classic tap repertory. On this level, these dances include the Shim Sham, Coles Stroll, the Copasetic Soft Shoe, and sections of repertory choreographed by master tap dancers Brenda Bufalino, Buster Brown, Charles “Honi” Coles, Leon Collins, Steve Condos, Bill Robinson, and others.

Beginner
Level 2: Beginner Tap for Adults & Teens 13+

This class is for students who have learned and feel comfortable with the basic vocabulary of tap, and have at least one year of experience. Students add more complex foot and movement skills, learn new vocabulary, and develop a strong foundation of tap technique. Original combinations, time steps, paddle and roll exercises, and music fundamentals are explored. Choreography includes the instructor’s original contemporary tap creations and concepts from the Copasetic Canon and classic tap repertory. On the Beginner level, these dances can include the Shim Sham and the Coles’ Stroll.

Intermediate Repertory
Level 4: Intermediate Repertory Tap for Adults & Teens 13+

Are you ready to hone your performance skills through classic and contemporary tap works? Each Session students are introduced to a work of tap repertory geared towards intermediate level students. Performance opportunities. No drop-ins allowed, students must register for an entire Session, but students may take one class before registering. Students in this Repertory course are encouraged to also attend one of our weekly Advanced Beginning or Intermediate tap technique classes.

Basic
Level 1: Basic Tap for Adults & Teens 13+

This class is for the student who has taken one or more Absolute Beginner Workshops or is returning to tap and needs a review. Basic tap classes strengthen skills of shuffles, flaps, cramp rolls, the Irish, and shuffle ball change, and give an introduction to time steps, fundamental music skills, parts of the “Shim Sham,” and more. Students may want to stay in Basic for a period of time to feel solid in their skills before moving on to Beginner Tap. Consult with your teacher for her/his recommendation.

Advanced Beginner
Level 3: Advanced Beginner Tap for Adults & Teens 13+

If you have never taken a tap dance class, or have had less than 6 months of classes, this is the class for you. Basic tap skills are introduced to build a solid basic level of technique (weight change, parts of the foot, stamps, hops, shuffles, flaps, cramp rolls, Irish, shuffle ball change, etc.) Basic fundamental music skills are introduced as well. Students learn unique combinations using these tap fundamentals and parts of the “Shim Sham.” Students may want to take one or several Absolute Beginner Workshops before moving on to Basic Tap. Consult with your teacher for her/his recommendation.
