YOUTH PROGRAM COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

CHECK IN & PLACEMENT CLASS, Monday 7/6 (9:45 AM):  The first day of the program will begin with a placement class, led by Tap City faculty and the Repertory Choreographers, to determine students’ skill level.  Students will be led through a tap warm up of basic material (shuffles, flaps, time-steps, and paddle and roll) and more challenging tap repertory.  Each student will be placed in the repertory group that is appropriate for her or his skill level.

REPERTORY GROUPS, Monday 7/6 – Thursday 7/9 (9:45 – 12:30)

- Ray Hesselink - Youth Repertory A

In the style of the great MGM films of the 1930-50s, reminiscent of such tap greats as Fred Astaire, Eleanor Powell and Ann Miller, Ray will use intricate rhythms and fun footwork to create challenging, musical and entertaining choreography. Ray has worked with the creative team of Broadway's Billy Elliot: The Musical as a tap dance trainer and consultant.  Students will perform Ray’s choreography in Tap Youth / Tap Future, July 9 at Symphony Space.

- Jimmy Tate- Youth Repertory B

"Explorations in Rhythm and Musicality":  Jimmy will teach his group his great tap choreography.  Jimmy is a popular teacher and performs his unique style of rock and roll tap.  He performed on Broadway in “Bring in da Noise/Bring in da Funk” and was the original “Tap Dance Kid”.   Students will perform in Tap Youth / Tap Future July 9 at Symphony Space.

LUNCH-TIME, Monday 7/6 – Wednesday 7/8 (12:30 – 2:00)

Each day students will eat their bag lunches in a supervised room.  On Monday they’ll watch an amazing collection of tap films and learn about tap history in a fun session with David Rider.  On Tuesday and Wednesday are our NEW Lunch Box Shows.  This is a chance for Youth Program students to see each other dance in a relaxed studio showing.  Students may apply for an opportunity to perform their solos, duos, trios or small ensemble dances that they bring from their home studios.  Read below under Youth Performances if you want to apply for an opportunity.  On Thursday there is no supervised lunch and parents should pick up students at 12:30.

MASTER CLASSES, Monday 7/6 – Wednesday 7/8 (2:00– 3:30):

- Hip Hop, Body Percussion & Drumming

  • Hip Hop with Iconic Dance Crew and Geo Hubela:  Bring your sneakers and your funk and get ready for Hip Hop moves (no tap shoes).
