R4 INT Susan Hebach

Pete Nugent’s “Breezin’”:  A classic rhythm tap routine from 1953 built on moderate tempo syncopations and gorgeous moves—never before taught at any tap festival!  Pete Nugent was a member of the Copasetics and the class act Pete, Peaches and Duke.  He was a popular choreographer--or tap stylist as he preferred to call himself—but none of his material has survived except this one work performed in the 50s by his student Nancy Howell.  “Breezin” was learned directly from Howell in an ATDF sponsored research trip.  Nugent prided himself on being more than a hoofer.  Although he insisted on clean, clear taps Nugent was primarily concerned with making full use of the stage.  “I’m a tap dancer, of course, first, last, and always, but . . . I prefer all body motion . . . Any hoofer can execute all the steps, but the way a man handles his body and travels is what give it class.”  (from Jazz Dance by Jean and Marshall Stearns).  Susan Hebach brings Nugent’s exquisite rhythm tap choreography to this Residency along with video footage of Nancy Howell and historical information on Nugent.

2-Day Courses (ages 15 to adult):  2-Day Courses on Friday and Saturday meet two days in a row, at the same 75 minute class time, with the same teacher and students.  Courses give students and teacher the opportunity to work in depth on technique, repertory and tap concepts.

Master Classes (ages 12 to adult):  select from 8 different master classes for a wide variety of styles and approaches to tap artistry.  Master classes are on Friday and Saturday, and meet once for a 75 minute class.

Levels for Adult Program/Master Classes (listed challenging to easiest):

ADV: Fast moving or challenging classes for advanced and professional tap dancers.

MIX: Mixed level classes for intermediate & advanced dancers. Students will work at their own level. Material taught may allow students to work more deeply on moderately paced or challenging concepts

INT: Easy paced intermediate classes for students who are very comfortable with the basics, time steps, paddle & roll, and are ready for moderately challenging choreography.

ADV BEG: Advanced Beginning classes for students who are comfortable with flaps, shuffles, time steps, paddle & roll.  Excellent choice for dancers with just a few years experience or older dancers who want to learn at an easy pace.

BEG: Beginning level classes for students who already know flaps and shuffles and are ready to learn fun and easy combinations.

INTRO: If you’ve always wanted to try tap, this is your chance. No experience necessary, some loaner tap shoes available.  If you can walk, you can tap.
