The program ends on Wednesday afternoon with the Youth Showcase, when dancers perform their newly learned tap piece for family, faculty and fellow students.
YOUTH PROGRAM SCHEDULE & COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
PLACEMENT CLASS, Sunday 7/6 (10:00-11:00): The first day of the program will begin with a placement class, led by Tap City faculty and the Repertory Choreographers, to determine students’ skill level. Students will be led through a tap warm up of basic material (shuffles, flaps, time-steps, and paddle and roll) and more challenging tap repertory. Each student will be placed in the repertory group that is appropriate for her or his skill level.
REPERTORY GROUPS, Sunday 7/6 – Wednesday 7/9 (11:15– 1:30)
- Josh Hilberman - Youth Repertory A: Buck & Wing
The Buck and Wing is one of the two original styles of tap dance--along with soft shoe--from the 1800's. Buck and Wing is a great flash style of tap, full of wings and sophisticated rhythms, and provides a foundation for all other tap styles. Joe "Buck and Wing" Stirling, a vaudeville performer from the 1930's, taught Josh this material, and he has been happily spreading the word ever since. Josh's course will culminate in the high energy performance of the “Vaudeville Buck & Wing Dance” in the Tap City Youth Showcase, July 9 at Symphony Space.
- Chloe Arnold - Youth Repertory B: It’s Time
Learn contemporary tap choreography to the music of today with a focus on strengthening technique, musicality and phrasing. Timing is everything. Students in this Repertory group will perform Chloe’s choreography in the Tap City Youth Showcase, July 9 at Symphony Space.
- Karen Callaway Williams - Youth Repertory C: Big Band Tap
This class will have fun tap dancing to the rhythms of Ellington, Basie and other great bands of the swing era. Students will perform “A Tap Dance Tribute to the Greatest Band Leaders of the World” in the Tap City Youth Showcase, July 9 at Symphony Space.
MASTER CLASSES, Sunday 7/6 – Tuesday 7/8 only (2:15– 3:30):
- Body Percussion Tap (BPT) with Michele Ribble and Edwin Fion
Students will learn the basic foundations of hand jive, body percussion, tapping, clapping, and slapping rhythms with feet and hands.
