PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM

Tap City proudly presents the 2007 Pre-Professional Program, geared especially for the advanced young adult (ages 14 - 19) seeking a challenging and unique educational and performance opportunity. The all-inclusive program focuses on developing well-rounded tap skills in a professional environment that stresses self-discipline and excellence. Selected by audition, students will work intensively with either Michelle Dorrance or Derick Grant, two of tap’s hottest and most innovative young choreographers. Dancers will work each morning on the preparation of two new pieces of choreography that will be performed on Wednesday evening in the Tap Youth/Tap Future performances at the Duke Theatre on 42nd Street.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN ADDITIONAL PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY

One of the unique offerings of the New York City Tap Festival is the extraordinary opportunity to perform in New York City.  Participants of the Pre Professional Program will perform the choreography of Michelle Dorrance or Derick Grant at The Duke Theater on 42nd Street on Wednesday evening in two shows: 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.  We strongly urge you to purchase tickets as soon as you are accepted into the program.  Last year’s performance was sold-out before the festival even began.  In addition to this performance there are two other opportunities that may be available to participants.

  • Youth Showcase of Talent – Tap City’s popular Youth Showcase has been the starting point for numerous stars of today.  Presented on Tuesday evening, July 10 at 5:00 pm, this informal showcase presents young dancers in ensemble or solo work. Location: P.S. 41
  • Tap Youth/Tap Future – In addition to the performance of the PPP rep pieces in both shows, some dancers will be selected to perform their own or their studio choreography as a soloist or as part of an ensemble at the Duke Theater on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm and/or 9:30 pm.
  • To be considered for either of the above performances, send a video of the choreography to be performed, with the costuming and actual performers (DVD or VHS/American format) to the Tap City office, attention Michelle Ribble.  This MUST be a separate video from the PPP application.
