Youth Showcase of Talent Tuesday 7/10
(6:30 - 8:30) |
Students will work each morning learning and polishing a piece of tap repertory. The first morning of the program will begin with a placement class led by the choreographers. Students will be placed in one of three groups based on skill level. Each afternoon, after a supervised lunch-break, students will take special Master Classes in Bucket Drumming, Classic Tap and Tap, Films & History. On Tuesday, the last day of the program, students will have an extra rehearsal in the afternoon instead of a master class, to polish their dance. The program ends on Tuesday evening with the Youth Showcase, when dancers perform their newly learned tap piece for family, faculty and fellow students.
Placement class Saturday, July 7 (10:30 – 11:30): The first day of the program will begin with a placement class, led by our four choreographers, to determine students’ skill level. Students will be led through a tap warm up of basic material (shuffles, flaps, time-steps, and paddle and roll) and more challenging tap repertory. Each student will be placed in the repertory group that is appropriate for their skill level.
REPERTORY REHEARSALS Saturday - Tuesday (10:30 – 1:00), & Tuesday (2:00 – 3:15):
- Ayodele Casel – Youth Repertory A
- Terry Brock & Michele Ribble – Youth Repertory B – Tap That! The team of Brock and Ribble will give two takes on style, rhythm and technique, with a focus on tap from Hollywood musical fame.
- Jason Samuels Smith - Youth Repertory C – Building Blocks. Composing choreography while developing polyrhythms designed to challenge your mind.
MASTER CLASSES Saturday – Monday (2:00 – 3:15):
- Bucket Drumming with Bernice “Boom-Boom” Brooks and Robin Burdulis – hone your percussion skills with fun exercises that will build better understanding of music theory, timing, and improvisation.
- Classic Tap with Harold “Stumpy” Cromer assisted by Sarah "Sour" Reich - Master Vaudevillian teaches classic tap from the Golden Era of Swing
- Tap Films, History & Fun with Susan Hebach - Amazing tap dance footage and history from the stars of the past and present
