2010 PPP Repertory Choreographer: Barbara Duffy

Tap City’s popular Teen program is geared specifically to the advanced young adult (ages 14 -19) seeking a challenging and unique educational and performance opportunity.  The all-inclusive program focuses on honing well-rounded tap skills in a professional environment that stresses self-discipline and excellence.  Selected by video audition, students will work intensively with
Barbara Duffy in the preparation of tap choreography that will be performed on the 4th evening of the program.

PPP OVERVIEW:

The week begins with orientation for parents and dancers on Monday, July 5 from 9:15-9:45 for a discussion about the week’s activities and an informal meet and greet with PPP participants and our choreographer, Barbara Duffy. Breakfast snacks will be provided.

Each day begins with an intensive class experience in which you’ll work with other advanced dancers in the development of new choreography.  Monday and Wednesday lunch times are structured activities for PPP participants.  Optional lunch activities are available on Tuesday.  A different master class is offered Monday through Wednesday afternoons.  An additional performance opportunity “Take it to the Studio” (an informal studio showcase featuring PPP participants) is scheduled for Monday afternoon from 4:00– 5:30.  Thursday evening PPP students perform their newly learned repertory piece at Tap Future: All Student Performance, 7:00 pm.  The week ends with students attending Friday’s Tap City Premier Performance to see the finest professional tap dancers from across the globe.  Students who wish may take Master Classes on Friday and Saturday for an additional fee.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

PPP REPERTORY (9:45 – 12:30)  Monday – Thursday

Barbara Duffy: Melodies, Grooves & Rhythms

 

The Residency with Barbara Duffy will focus on finding the melodies in your rhythms while feeling the groove. The group will learn a work of Barbara’s dynamic tap choreography and spend four days immersed in her detailed approach to tap technique and performance.

LUNCH TIME EVENTS: (12:45 – 1:45) Monday – Wednesday

 

Monday:  PPP talk & video with Choreographer Barbara Duffy (required attendance)

Join our PPP choreographer for video and discussion of her work, style and thoughts on choreography and working as a professional tap dancer.


Tuesday:
  Adult Program in studio showcase performance (optional activity, or free lunch time)

 

Wednesday:  Attend Tap City’s popular lunchtime “Tap Talks, Tap Films” led by Tony Waag and historian Constance Valis Hill. (required attendance)

EVENING ACTIVITIES & OPTIONAL EVENTS:

Thursday – 7:00 pm at Symphony Space

Tap Future will be presented in one show this year at the spacious Symphony Space Theater.  The PPP piece will be presented along with repertory pieces from the Youth Program and the Adult Residencies. 

Friday – Tap City Premier Performance 8:00 pm at Symphony Space

Join other PPP participants at Symphony Space on Friday evening at 8:00pm for the cutting edge Tap City concert featuring today’s hottest tap stars.  A ticket to this exciting evening event is included in your PPP tuition.  More discussion about this social event will take place at the Orientation Meeting. 

Friday & Saturday – Master Classes at Chelsea Studios

Tap City ends with two days of amazing Master Classes at the American Tap Dance Center (Optional Classes, not included in tuition).

Pre-Professional Program Application Information:

The Pre-Professional Program is for advanced tap dancers ages 14 – 19 who are ready for an intensive class and performance experience.  Dancers will be selected by video audition.

We do not guarantee that dancers will be accepted into the PPP.  The cast will be balanced to include dancers from diverse areas of the world, representing different ages, gender, and experience.  If you are not accepted into the PPP, there are alternative options to participate in the adult residency program. Notice of acceptance into PPP will be made by e-mail.  Students who are accepted will need to send full payment and registration fee to reserve their spot in the program.

  • Print and complete PPP application.
  • Send application with the $35 Registration Fee and a video (American format DVD or an accessible YouTube link to view video content) that is from 2-4 minutes long and demonstrates advanced tap technique, good timing, musicality and performance skills.  An audition video should include: 
    • a brief personal introduction that tells us your name and age, motivation for being in the program, and the choreographer of the work you are presenting in the video
    • a 2 minute demonstration of advanced tap technique (different types of time steps (rhythm & traditional) with music, paddle and roll series, flash steps such as pull-backs & wings, figures/phrases in 8 bar or 16 bar sets.

In order to be eligible for the above performance opportunities, students must be registered participants in the Pre-Professional Program.  We're sorry, but due to space constraints, Mini-Fest students or students registered in Master Classes only are NOT eligible to apply to perform in the showcases.

2) TAP FUTURE - ALL STUDENT PERFORMANCE: (ages 6 - 96)

Do you have the urge to emerge?  Tap City puts ALL of our students on stage in a fun show of youth, teen and adult students. Tap dancers will perform for each other—on Broadway!--in an informal performance featuring the newly minted work from all of the Tap City Residencies from the Mini-Fest, Youth, Pre-Professional and Adult Programs. It’s a chance to see and be seen, with all performers sitting in the audience to watch the works of fellow students, amateurs and professionals from around the US and around the world. A few dancers and ensembles will be selected from the Adult, Teen and Youth “Take it to the Studio” Showcases to perform also on this evening. Hosted by our entire Education Program Faculty and ATDF Artistic Director Tony Waag.

The Gregory Hines Youth Scholarship Fund


For advanced beginner through professional students, ages 6-19 in need of financial assistance to study in the Mini Fest, Youth, Adult, or Pre–Professional Programs. Full or partial scholarships will be awarded. Visit Scholarships for instructions and printable scholarship application form. Application deadline is May 1, 2010.
