4-Day Residencies (ages 15 to adult):  Students work intensively for 2 hours and 45 minutes every day with a choreographer to learn a work of tap dance repertory. Each Repertory group will perform their newly learned tap piece at Tap Future - the Tap City All Student Performance at Symphony Space on Thursday evening July 8 (students may opt out of the performance if they wish).  Residency tuition includes a ticket for each performer to sit in the audience for the Showcase.  Invite your family and friends to the Showcase to cheer everyone on!  Additional tickets available through Symphony Space, see above for Showcase and ticket information.

Residency Descriptions:

R1 ADV  Guillem Alonso & Juan de Juan: This residency is a fusion of rhythm tap dance (Guillem Alonso) and Spanish Flamenco dance (Juan de Juan). The focus will be to visualize flamenco guitar rhythms and vocals with tap and flamenco footwork and rhythms, creating an innovative choreography that merges the dynamic range of each style.  Classes will be accompanied by flamenco vocalists.  Musical influences for the choreography will be drawn from the music of Paco de Lucia, Tomatito, and Vincente Amigo. Alonso and Juan are currently collaborating on a new performance project to be included in “the Black Sones”, which is a musical tribute to Gregory Hines.

R2 INT  Brenda Bufalino:

Intermediate Technique & Repertory: an intensive workshop, taught at a moderate pace, focusing on Bufalino’s stellar technical exercises, her double-time series, and a work of Bufalino repertory.

R3 ADV Dormeshia Sumbry Edwards:

Rhythm Tap Intensive: Ms. Sumbry-Edwards’ magnificent tap repertory and precise approach to technique.

R4 INT/ADV. BEG. Katherine Kramer

The Heat and Sparkle of Ralph Brown:  This Residency will explore the playful style, hot rhythms and dynamic dance of this effervescent hoofer and member of the Copasetics, who was featured at the Cotton Club and danced in the in the 1930s-50s with the bands of Cab Calloway, Dizzie Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and Count Basie.   Katherine studied with Ralph Brown in the 1970s and has included his material in her repertory since that time. This Residency will be a moderate pace suitable for Advanced Beginner and Intermediate dancers.

Master Classes (ages 12 to adult):  select from 20 different master classes for a variety of styles, levels and approaches to tap artistry.  Master classes are on Friday and Saturday, and meet once for a 90 minute class.
