2012 YOUTH PROGRAM (ages 9-15)

The Tap City Youth Program is 5 days packed with tap dancing fun for intermediate and advanced level dancers ages 9 to 15. Our program offers young dancers a fun, supportive and challenging environment to develop well-rounded tap skills. The all-inclusive program includes:

 

  • 4-Day Tap Repertory Intensives with professional choreographers Lisa La Touche and Nicholas Young
  • Daily Tap Technique class * NEW THIS YEAR *
  • Master Classes, specially designed for young dancers
  • Rehearsals for TAP IT OUT! * NEW THIS YEAR *
  • (2) Tickets (1 student ticket plus 1 Adult Chaperone) to the Tap City Kick Off Event the Copasetic Boat Ride
  • Admission to Tap Talks/Tap Films & Tap Awards
  • Performance at Tap Future, “the Tap City All-Student Performance ”
  • Performance in TAP IT OUT! * NEW THIS YEAR *
  • Tap City T-Shirt (This is your costume to perform your Rep piece)

YOUTH PROGRAM PRE-PLACEMENT DVD: All students will be pre-placed in their Youth Program Repertory classes. Please send a DVD submission or web link via YouTube etc. that demonstrates your technique and performance skills showing the following material: shuffles, flaps, time-steps, cramp rolls, paddle and roll, pull backs, favorite flash step, and perform a one-minute tap choreography piece to music demonstrating your ability to keep time while expressing your personal style. Once the submitted DVD or web link is reviewed, each student will be placed in the repertory group that is appropriate for his or her skill level. Space is limited to 35 dancers.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

TECHNIQUE: Youth Program students will be placed in either Group A or Group B, based on their technical level and placement video. Each day begins with a class to warm everyone up and develop clean tap technique, taught by either Lisa La Touche or Nicholas Young.

REPERTORY: After a quick break, students will continue working in their Repertory Group with either choreographer Nicholas Young or Lisa La Touche. Nicholas Young will be creating “Shout Out” – an a capella piece using orchestrated Tap, basic clapping patterns and percussive vocal sounds. Lisa LaTouche (TBA)

LUNCH: Be sure to send your dancer with daily lunches, healthy snacks, fruit juices, water, energy bars etc. for a long day of dancing. Students will have lunchtime in a designated studio with staff supervision.

MASTER CLASSES: Each afternoon dancers will have a special master class, designed to enhance their rhythm skills and tap knowledge.

SHIM SHAM: Students who don’t know the Shim Sham (also called the “Tap Dancer’s Anthem”) will be placed in a class to learn it. Students who already know the dance will be placed in a review class that will go over the Shim Sham and other material.

TAP IT OUT REHEARSALS: Students will rehearse at the end of each day Monday-Wednesday on their Tap It Out performance material. More details coming after you register, and also visit: TAP IT OUT

Tap City begins with two days of amazing Master Classes at the American Tap Dance Center (Optional Classes, not included in tuition).

TAP FUTURE CONCERT at Symphony Space, Thursday 7/12 7:00 PM

On the final evening of the Youth Program all dancers will meet at Symphony Space to perform the new tap dance they learned at the Tap Future performance.  Families and friends who want to see their dancer perform will need to purchase tickets.  Student performers will not need a ticket.
