Tap City 2012 PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM (ages 14-19) Monday, July 9 – Friday, July 13, 2012 Tap City’s popular Teen program is geared specifically to the advanced young adult (ages 14 -19) seeking a challenging and unique educational and performance opportunity. The all-inclusive program focuses on honing well-rounded tap skills in a professional environment that stresses self-discipline and excellence. Selected by video audition, students will work intensively with a professional tap choreographer in the preparation of tap choreography that will be performed on the 4th evening of the program. The Pre-Professional Program includes:
PPP PROGRAM PRE-PLACEMENT DVD: All PPP students must be accepted into the program. Please send a DVD submission or web link (via YouTube) that demonstrates your technique and performance skills showing the following material: time-steps, paddle and roll combinations, pull backs, wings, favorite flash step, and perform a 2-3 minute tap choreography piece/excerpt to music demonstrating your ability to keep time while expressing your personal style. Once the submitted DVD or web link is reviewed, each student will be evaluated and contacted regarding acceptance into the Pre-Professional Program. Not all applicants will be accepted. EVENING ACTIVITIES & OPTIONAL EVENTS:
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: REPERTORY: Each morning students will work with Choreographer Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards learning a professional-level work of tap repertory. Over the four days they will polish the work and prepare it for performance. On the evening of the fourth day, students will perform their newly-minted work for other Tap City students, friends, and family at the Tap Future performance, at Symphony Space. LUNCH: On the first day, students will meet at lunchtime with Choreographer Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards for videos and talk about her dance career. Students should bring a bag lunch. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students will have a 45 minute lunch break. TAP IT OUT REHEARSALS: Students will rehearse each afternoon, Monday-Wednesday on their Tap It Out performance material. More details coming after you register. MUSICIANSHIP INTENSIVE: After a 30 minute break, dancers will have a special master class in the essential music skills that all tap dancers need. Led by Susan Hebach, Brenda Bufalino, and Margaret Morrison, with live musical accompaniment. The three sessions are designed to enhance students’ skills as young performers, improvisers, and future choreographers. REPERTORY REVIEW OR REHEARSAL TBA: An extra hour at the end of the afternoon is set aside, if the choreographer needs a little extra time with dancers. THURSDAY: PPP students are dismissed early at 12:15. A short tech rehearsal, time TBA, will happen at Symphony Space in the afternoon. EVENING ACTIVITIES & OPTIONAL EVENTS: MASTER CLASSES at the American Tap Dance Center, Saturday & Sunday 7/7 & 7/8 Tap City begins with two days of amazing Master Classes at the American Tap Dance Center (Optional Classes, not included in tuition). COPASETIC BOAT RIDE, Monday, 7/9 - Check in at 7:00PM (Ticket for student included in tuition)
TAP CITY-TAP COMPETITION, Tuesday, 7/10 6:30 PM (Optional Event for students ages 12 - up)
TAP TALKS/TAP FUTURE - TAP AWARDS, Wednesday, July 11 TAP FUTURE CONCERT at Symphony Space, Thursday 7/12 7:00 PM On the final evening of the PPP all dancers will meet at Symphony Space to perform the new tap repertory work they learned at the Tap Future performance. Families and friends who want to see their dancer perform will need to purchase tickets. Student performers will not need a ticket. TAP IT OUT!
